Barry Almy and the Rev. Dr. Elizabeth McCormick have been under appointment by the PC(USA) and serving in Sudan since 1994. Betsy is a professor of theological studies at Nile Theological College and Barry is PC(USA)'s regional liaison for Sudan.

Founded by the Sudan Evangelical Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church of Sudan, the Nile Theological College provides extensive pastoral and evangelical training for men and women. The college also trains Christian education specialists as part of an effort to qualify teachers of the Christian faith to teach in Sudan’s schools. The two churches operate the college through an independent board. Classes at the college are in English and center around the Bible, Christian doctrine and history, and practical Christian living. After five years of study, including a preparatory year in which students focus on Bible content and English, students are awarded bachelor of arts degrees.

Elizabeth teaches biblical interpretation and pastoral ministry courses. She’s also invited to preach and lead seminars frequently in Protestant churches around Khartoum. "Faith, for Sudanese Christians, is their life, not just a part of it," writes Elizabeth. "Despite incredible hardships, which test their faith daily, they exude a joy that continually inspires and encourages us to live our lives of faith more boldly."

As regional liaison, Barry serves as a "bridge" between partner churches and other mission co-workers in the region and other members of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) engaged in mission in Sudan: individuals, congregations, presbyteries, synods, the General Assembly Council staff, and mission support groups.

Barry was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. During his service in the U.S. Army, he spent three years in Germany. After returning to the United States, he worked for J & L Steel Corporation in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He later became a police officer, serving in Wilkinsburg and Economy, Pennsylvania, before going to work for Pinkerton's Inc. in Pittsburgh. He returned to Aliquippa to work as a police officer before landing a similar job in Sharon in 1990. Barry is an elder and a member of the Presbyterian Church of Sharon in Pennsylvania.

Betsy was born in Pittsburgh and raised in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. She received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma before earning a doctor of ministry degree from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. Before her assignment to Khartoum, Betsy was pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Leetsdale, Pennsylvania, and associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Sharon. She is a member of the Presbytery of Shenango.
